Rock Solid
Our Lord, Jesus Christ, prescribed the life of a true Christian as a life built on the rock of revelation. In fact, He said He would build His church upon this foundation. So, what is the rock of revelation? It is the revelation given to us by our Heavenly Father, in our hour of need.
Revelation comes when we quit trusting in “the things of men” and follow the Holy Spirit. We will be unable to receive heavenly revelation as long as we focus on THINGS other than God.
“Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:17,18
Many theologians believe that Peter was the rock Jesus spoke of; therefore, they built the church upon Peter, the first pope. If this is true then how does one interpret the following verse?
But He (Jesus) turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Matthew 16:23
To believe that Jesus is referring to Peter as the rock is to deny that God reveals his will to all those who seek him. This also suggests that Peter alone was capable of hearing God’s disclosures. Thus, the only justifiable conclusion is that, indeed, heavenly rev-elation is the rock on which Jesus purposed to build His church, not a mere mortal. This type of lifestyle is not being self-righteous, but rather living in accordance with the true church established by Jesus Christ.
