Sanctified Through Obedience

Part 3 - Being Righteous

But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness." And he was called the friend of God. James 2:20-23

People get really confused about one word, righteousness. To be righteous. We even used it in pun and even in mockery and conversation. “Oh, he is righteous.” Meaning he is cool or he is above board or he fits society very well. But righteous simply means to be right with God. How are you going to be right with God? Abraham is the example. Three different times, Abraham is mentioned as one who was righteous. What made him righteous? He didn’t just have faith to believe. He did what God said to do. “Offer your son. Put him on the altar, let him on as a sacrifice unto me. Give me your son.” What did he do? He made his son gather up the very wood that would be the fiery kindling that would scorch his flesh. He carried it upon the mountain and laid him on the altar ready to take the dagger and put it into him because God said. You take a man like that. He is a friend of God because he is willing to do whatever God said. Yet, there are many who don’t even believe we ought to tithe! “Isn’t that was Old Testament?” “I don’t believe we ought to attend services because I can worship God on my own.” “I don’t believe I have to walk according to the way of the church people, because, you know, it doesn’t matter anyway. I gave my life to Christ when I was seven years old.”

There is an accountability which is growing stronger and the requirements are becoming greater each day we take a breathe. There is much more to being a Christian than just to attending church. There is much more to being Christ-like than just going through the formality and saying the right words in order to fit in the church group. There is much more to being a Christian than saying, “well, my wife does all the praying, She is going to pray me through.” It won’t work! It’s all from each and every one of us individual. No one is going to get there for you. You are accountable before God.
