Functions of Angels

When Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane and taken before Pontius Pilate, He told those present that there were over twelve legions of angels at his disposal. That equates to 12,000 angels. “Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?” (Matthew 26:53). How many angels do you have? Does it make any difference how many Angels are appointed to you? All who are born again have at least one angel appointed to watch over us and report to the Lord about our actions.

Different angels have different functions. They are not stamped out of the same mold. Each angel has an appointed assignment. Gabriel was sent to Daniel to give him understanding. He was also sent to give understanding to Zacharias, the father of John the Baptist and to Mary, mother of Jesus. “Zacharias said to the angel (Gabriel), ‘How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years'” (Luke 1:8).Then the angel (Gabriel) said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in you womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS'” (Luke 1:30).

The archangel Michael, however, was created to be a warring spirit. Many times Michael was involved in fighting the enemies of God and enemies of God’s people. Satan cannot stand against Michael and his angels, for they are always victorious.

At that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, Such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. (Ref. Daniel 12:1)

“Yet Michael the archangel, in contending with the devil, when he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring against him a reviling accusation, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!'” (Ref. Jude 1:9).

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer” (Rev. 12:7, 8).

Michael and Gabriel are the only two angels mentioned by name throughout the Bible; however, their functions are quite different. In fact, in the book of Daniel, Michael comes to Gabriel’s aid when he is unable to fight his way through the demonic principalities of the air (Daniel 10:13). It is obvious that angels have different powers. They apparently are not all equal, receiving various measures of power and favor from God.

Andrea saw in the spirit realm a dark form rise up and hover over the body of the pastor as he lay on the floor of the sanctuary. She immediately began to rebuke it believing that because it was a dark form, it was evil. As soon as she began her rebuke the Lord said, “What are you doing?” She replied, “I am casting out this demon.” Then the Lord informed her that this was not a demon but rather an Angel. He went on to explain that he was His Warring Angel, appointed to watch over the pastor of the church.

Puzzled, Andrea began to pray to the Lord for understanding. She found her confirmation while reading a book by Kenneth Hagin. In the book, Papa Hagin referred to black angels as Warring Angels. The book indicated that he had met many people through the years who had given similar eyewitness accounts of visitations of Warring Angels. It just goes to show you cannot judge a book by its cover or an angel by its form.

Angels as God’s Messengers

Many of the brand name preachers have turned to humanistic teachings when it comes to the supernatural; attempting to explain away the spiritual gifts through their teaching, saying that the works of Christ Jesus are not for today.

A book by a well-known preacher whose name I will not reveal teaches that Jacob’s self-will gave him the power to change the color and markings of his father-in-law, Laban’s, goats. This made Jacob’s flock larger than Laban’s; therefore, Jacob obtained greater riches and wealth, giving him power over his father-in-law. This humanistic teaching goes on to say that Jacob envisioned or meditated into existence the speckled and striped goats marked for his flock.

The truth is that while Jacob was sleeping, an angel came to him and gave him the revelation that the crossbred goats, speckled and striped, would increase in number. So Jacob made a wager with Laban that every speckled and striped goat would be added to his flock. This is how Jacob obtained the larger flock, by the word of the Lord given through an angel in a dream (Genesis 31:1-16). Even to this day it is a well-known in the ranching industry that crossbred animals produce healthier and more offspring; as were Jacobs flock.

The will of every person is to be in control of his or her surroundings and future. We are commanded, however, to die to the man within us and allow the Spirit of God to guide us into the unknown. It takes true faith in God to allow the Holy Spirit, who we cannot see, to lead us in the direction God desires for our destiny. If we follow the flesh, we will not experience the awesome adventures and blessings God has for.

It is very easy to overlook the obvious truth found in the scriptures when a dynamic orator spins his teachings into his own philosophy. I do not mean to be critical of others and their teaching; however, we need not stray from the truths recorded in the Bible.

The will of every person is to be in control of his or her surroundings and future. We are commanded to die to the old man within us and allow the Spirit of God to guide us into the unknown. It takes true faith in God to allow the spirit, whom you cannot see, to lead you in the direction God desires for our destiny. If we follow the flesh, we cannot experience the awesome adventures God has for us in the spirit.

I do believe the Holy Spirit and the angels of God minister to us and FOR us. There is a difference in hearing the Holy Spirit and hearing an angel of the Lord. First of all, the Holy Spirit is part of the Godhead. An angel is a messenger from the throne of God. It is very clear when the Holy Spirit is speaking, yet it is a little fuzzy when an angel speaks. When the Holy Spirit speaks it sounds so clear that you may think you heard Him audibly. When receiving a message from an angel of God, it is like what Apostle Paul said, “Like looking through a glass dimly.” (Ref. 1 Corinthians 13:12) Either way, if you’re sure of your source, then obey either one you cannot go wrong.

Angelic Possession

You will find very few Spirit-filled Christians who disagree that a person can be demon possessed. If Satan has possession of a person’s spirit, soul and body, he can use that person to fulfill his evil deeds.

We see on television from time to time where a convict confesses that the devil took full control over his mind and body. He may say, “I did not know what I was doing.” Now, the jury of the world is still out on whether or not this can happen; however, you and I know it can happen and it has happened far too many times.

Identifying the works of the devil is easy, and those works are reported daily in the news media. It is acceptable for us to say, “Yes, a person can be demon possessed.” However, many refuse to believe an angel can possess a person. Why is this? Both angels and demons are spiritual beings directed by two separate forces, either by the Holy Spirit or Satan. The possessor of one’s spirit will determine who has eternal rights over the person’s body, soul and spirit.

Recorded supernatural events over many centuries tell us how possessed people have accomplished phenomenal feats. Some have been demon possessed; others possessed by an angel. You may not like to look at it this way, but where there is negative there is also always positive. It is easy to see that a person committing evil is demon possessed. We have also seen supernatural signs follow God’s people, but why do we not say they are possessed by an angel? It stands to reason that if Satan is going to work through one of his people, he will appoint a demon or demons to fulfill his evil through that person. Think of it this way. When we operate in the gift of discernment and cast out demons, we are in effect casting out evil spirits. You cannot find one scripture in the Bible where Satan is cast out of anyone, because he is not going to allow himself to be put in that position when he has fallen angels (demons) to do it for him. You will find many accounts in the Bible where demons are cast out of people. The only place Satan has been cast out of is heaven (Luke 10:18). Remember, demons are simply fallen angels. 1/3 of the angels followed after Satan, 2/3 are still on our side. Think about it, we outnumber Satan, 2 to 1.

When we witness the power of miracles, we are seeing the work of God’s ministering spirits orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. There have been many times that the presence of God was so strong I could see His angels ministering in the midst of the congregation. Next time you are in a service where the gifts of the Holy Spirit are in operation, ask the Lord to open your eyes so that you may see His angels at work. Anytime you see a minister moving in the gifts to the Holy Spirit, you are witnessing someone who is being possessed (spurred, moved by a strong feeling, under supernatural power) by an angel of the Lord. But to which of the angels has He ever said: ‘Sit at My right hand, till I make Your enemies Your footstool’? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister FOR those who will inherit salvation?” (Hebrews 1:13, 14).

Decisions we make in this life can modify our eternal life. Most people have it in their heads that when we go to heaven we will all be equal. I have heard people quote this scripture inferring that we are all equal in the eyes of God and He endows no one more than the other. “Then Peter opened his mouth and said; ‘In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him'” (Acts 10:34, 35).The fact is that we will NOT be equal in heaven any more than we are here on earth. You may be more familiar with the King James Verse, “….God is no respecter of persons….” meaning that He shows no favor over one nation, but favors those who do His work of righteousness. Righteousness simply means to be right with God. The only way you can be right with God is to do what God asks of you.

What we do in this life will determine where we sit with the Lord in His kingdom for eternity. I don’t know about you, but I will not be satisfied with simply sweeping heaven’s streets of gold or polishing His pearly gates. The measure you serve God in this life will determine the measure of your reward for eternity.

So Jesus answered and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel’s, who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time;…and in the age to come, eternal life” (Mark 10:29, 30). “For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works” (Matthew 16:27). There is good reason to serve Christ daily, for in doing so you will receive a greater reward. We obey God because of our love and fear of Him, and for the rewards He gives in this life and the life to come.

Years ago, my wife, who has since passed away, related to me an experience she had as a young adult at her home church in Savannah, Georgia. A visiting minister asked the pastor of the church if he could pray for him. When the minister touched the pastor, the pastor fell out under the power of the minister’s, ministering spirit, his angel.
